All you need to know about Android 4.4 KitKat !

Google has put online the list of smartphones and tablets that can take advantage of Android 4.4 KiKat. First deliveries of the Nexus 5 will begin on November 4, the Nexus 5 will be the first smartphone to be equipped with this version. On the other Nexus devices, Google said : “ Android 4.4, KitKat, All which comes on Nexus 5 Will soon be available on Nexus 4 , 7, 10, the Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One Google Play edition devices in the coming weeks . ”. KitKat will be available in the coming weeks for :

  • Nexus 4
  • Nexus 7
  • Nexus 10
  • Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Edition
  • HTC One Google Edition

Conspicuously absent: the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. We believe that this absence is due to the architecture used in this smartphone: Ti OMAP 4460 (ARM Cortex-A9) bi-heart clocked at 1.2 GHz PowerVR SGX540 . It should no longer be supported by Texas Instruments to date, unfortunately. Finally, Sony, LG and Samsung have already announced that their flagship devices will benefit from KitKat  in the coming months.

Android 4.4 KitKat seems to be an update to the already well-know Jelly Bean rather than a big update for the Android Framework : Google has introduced an impressive number of small innovations, we summarized it all in the following paragraphs

The focus is, as always, on performance, but with KitKat google optimize the work already done, which makes Android even more effective. Especially in all less noble devices that do not have first-class processors. According to the Android engineers, native applications developed by Google consume fewer resources and thus require a smaller amount of RAM, Android 4.4 KiKat is compatible with devices that incorporate only  512 MB of RAM.

Google has made some visual changes to the system. First, KitKat version is more suitable for “high-resolutionq” beyond 450 dpi.

This pixel density will require new designs and icons to be neater, from the developers. As a reminder, most smartphones have brought slabs of high-definition (1080p) on screens between 4.7 and 5.5 inches.

Jelly Bean had introduced many “blue” in the various interfaces. With KitKat on the other hand,  we have much less blue! The status bar is now transparent and elements change color depending on the content displayed.

Android 4.4 KitKat is also more transparent, different bars are no longer opaque. This makes the content more visible, and simplifies interfaces.

A new “Full screen” mode  will also give more visibility to videos or digital books, not to mention the games. A simple gesture will  show the status bar. This already exists in some applications, Google will simply generalize.

Google also introduced new icons, including icons related to the “Cloud”. Google took the opportunity to make fun of Apple and their new iOS 7 share button.

Developers will also have in hand new transitions for their new applications, however, Google did not give further details on this point.

As we have seen earlier in the week , the management of messaging has already been partially reviewed with the  new Hangouts which combines SMS, MMS and instant messaging.

Also note the arrival of new emoticons “ Emoji “  to make conversations more fun and colorful .

“Ok Google.”. Controls without physically touching the screen are no longer just reserved for the Moto X – they are now part of the Nexus 5.Capture-d’écran-2013-10-31-à-19.56.11

You can define keywords to activate or “wake up” the voice search from Google Now. KitKat greatly improves voice commands and would also make a kind of dialogue between users and the smartphone.Like Apple’s Siri ; voice assistant, Google  have made a lot of work to streamline and humanize the interaction, taking advantage of technologies of customized recommendations from Google Now.

Difficult to improve call management ?! Google has apparently succeeded.

Our smartphones can  make in order our most important incoming calls, received calls and  by analyzing their frequencies ,priority calls will be highlighted. But there are new solutions such as “smart caller ID” that allows us to display additional information (image or the name of the company) who calls us. Google will search in databases, including Google+ and Google Maps to display information on a number of our directory or an unknown call, for example , that’s pretty neat if you ask !

Particular attention has been given to productivity in the workplace. With 4.4 KitKat, Google provides better support for printers and scanners.

The integration between QuickOffice  and  Google Drive  is now more obvious, so we will be able to open a document, edit it and save it with a simple touch  from the cloud,so we will always make sure of having a copy protected against any unforeseen problem .

As should be the case on the next version of CyanogenMod, developers and users can make video capture, in addition to simple screenshots.

You will no longer need to root your device, the option is available in the “options for developers.” It is not really a feature to make screencasts, but it can be used by developers to make video demos , for example : a developer could help users solving their problems using the new “Helpouts” from Google !
